SITEKI – Armed men broke into a mosque in Siteki in the early hours of Friday morning and stole E4 000 cash plus a cellphone, whose value is estimated at E2 500.

This is the latest in a series of armed robberies around the Lubombo Region, where businesses and residences of businesspeople of Asian origin have been targeted.
According to an Asian man, who was inside the mosque when the robbery took place, three armed men used an open window to gain entry into the structure before breaking the door of a room, where two people were asleep.

He said upon breaking the door, the men, who had their faces covered in balaclavas, fired indiscriminately before demanding money.
“They shoot, shoot! Then say where is money? Bring money (sic),” he said in his strong Asian accent.
He said when they told the robbers that they did not have money, they were threatened with death, something he said terrified them such that they gave in to the demand and handed all monies to the robbers plus the cellphone.

He said the robbers left without hurting them and the other people who were within the Mosque compound but in another room.
The Asian man could not give a clear description of the robbers but said the one who was at the forefront and firing indiscriminately could be a foreigner.

“He spoke nice English, no siSwati,” said the Asian man.
Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that the robbery was reported to the police adding that the suspects were still at large.
