SIMUNYE – RSSC employees are now required to provide breath specimens for analysis of alcohol content in their system, before entering premises of the two sugar factories run by the company.

The Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC) MD, Nick Jackson, said this was one of the measures that have been undertaken by the company in order to curb industrial fatalities. He said this while making a presentation during a tour of Simunye Sugar factory by Zambia President Edgar Lungu yesterday.

“Everyone who enters the gate has to blow their breath and if it goes green, then it means you have a problem,” said Jackson.
The precise name of the device that is used for collecting and analysing the breath specimen was not revealed but it was only described as a ‘sophisticated’ device.

RSSC security officers demonstrated how the device functions when the president and his delegation entered the premises of the factory.
Some cabinet ministers, security officials and journalists, provided their breath specimen before entering the factory. Meanwhile, during Jackson’s presentation, President Lungu asked how the company was ensuring that there were no industrial fatalities. In response, Jackson told the president that RSSC has committed a lot of resources in ensuring the safety of its workers.

However, he told the president that the company has suffered quite a number of industrial fatalities in the past couple of years.
“We have had injuries in the past, something which is very disturbing,” he stated. Meanwhile, Jackson said Lungu’s tour of the Simunye sugar factory provided an opportunity for RSSC to showcase its world class agricultural infrastructure and further display what the country had to offer in terms of sugar production. Jackson said the company was proud to be visited by a head of State. “We are here to showcase Swaziland,” he stated briefly.
