MANZINI – While sex work remains illegal and an offence in the country, the number of sex workers seems to be increasing daily, especially in the Manzini region.

The city streets are now infested with sex workers who pose near most of the traffic lights and publicly offer motorists and members of the public their services at a fee.
A lot of women have been spotted in the city centre and many motorists have called this publication, staying that the sex workers go to the extent of even touching their cars, in a bid to stop them during the night.
“The town is full of women who stand in groups wearing revealing outfits in the evenings and stop our vehicles before asking if we want to have a good time.

“What is the role of the police when it comes to such? This city has been turned to Hillbrow where you come across sex workers in each and every corner,” one caller, who refused to be named, said last week.
Apparently the sex workers are working on innovative ways to lure their customers and standing along the traffic lights is one of them.

During random interviews, it was discovered that while most men do use the services of sex workers, a significant percentage find them unappealing.
“The police are all over the city, however, there is nothing done about these women who are found in every street of Manzini.

“They even come near the traffic lights, wave and even touch vehicles sometimes. Such acts are bad and we just can’t stand it anymore,” another member of the public said.
When some of the sex workers were interviewed on Friday night, they revealed that most of their clients were married men or those who were in serious relationships.

“Most men will book us for one hour to get it over and done with as quickly as possible, because they have partners. We ask no questions, it is all about the money,” one of the sex workers said.
Most revealed that they were making a lot of money through this business, hence they were found in every street of the city. They further revealed that the police did not interfere with their business as they had no proof that they were engaged in sex work.
“They do not come near us and we are happy about that. If they could call us in for questioning we would sue them. No one has evidence that we are sex workers and that makes our job easier,” another revealed.
The sex workers’ ages range from 18 to 45 and most revealed that they had been on the job for many years.
