MANZINI – A dark winter morning, the sound of a bridging firearm followed by gunshots could send anyone on a sprint.

This was the case for Ndumiso Ndwandwe who encountered some bruises and a sprained neck as he ran for his life in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Ndwandwe was rushing to catch the staff bus when he heard someone yelling at him to stop. He did not see who the person was and decided to pick up his speed. What in fact caused Ndwandwe to bolt was that he heard the sound of a gun bridging, followed by numerous shots.

Narrating the unbelievable tale, Ndwandwe from kaKhoza, who works at The George Hotel in Manzini, said the staff bus normally picked them up as early as 5am. He said he only got out of this house at 4.45am and therefore had to rush because he was already late.
“As I was running, I noticed a car parked by the side of the road but I paid no mind to it. My attention was only drawn to it when I heard someone shouting at me to stop. I did not see the person and his voice did not sound familiar, the only thing that came to my mind was to run even faster.

“In those few seconds of confusion, I heard the sound of a gun bridging and that was when I decided there was absolutely no way I was stopping because I thought I was going to be shot or kidnapped,” narrated Ndwandwe.
He said just as he was picking up speed, two gunshots were fired. He said by then, he did not even know where he was running to as those gunsshots were followed by at least two more.

“I ran to the nearest homestead and hid behind some bushes. I realised that there were more than two people following me. I did not think they were police officers because they were not in uniform and even though it was dark, their car did not look blue and white,” he further said.
