MASEYISINI – Despite an announcement getting rid of him as Indvuna of Vusweni Umphakatsi yesterday, self-confessed PUDEMO member Reggie Lukhele has vowed to stay in power.

PUDEMO is an acronym for the People’s United Democratic Movement, a political entity which was proscribed alongside others in the country. Lukhele accused the people who announced his relief from the position of misleading people and cowardice, saying everything was done in haste ‘without anybody’s knowledge’.

The declaration of his removal followed an announcement on national radio calling all residents of Vusweni to a meeting yesterday morning.

According to the announcement, the meeting had been called by the Mdluli ruling household of Mashobeni South. To note is that Vusweni is a subsidiary of the main umphakatsi of Mashobeni South, under the jurisdiction of the late Chief Mgodzi. In the radio announcement, all residents were urged to attend the gathering, without fail.

The agenda had not been stated, but Lukhele did not bother himself to attend.  He said he later heard from the grapevine that the meeting had been intended to oust him from his position, and that his successor was announced in the presence of close to 300 residents.

Titus Mabuza was announced as his successor, and a committee to work alongside the new headman was also put in place. The latest development was also confirmed by the programme director, Oscar Msibi.

He explained that the change in leadership was facilitated by the elders from Mashobeni South, and that Lukhele had only been in the position on an acting capacity. “They were here to make a pronouncement regarding the person to assume the position of overseer. As protocol dictates, the overseer has to work with a committee led by the headman.
