BUHLENI – Police officers under Buhleni have a challenge of the high number of pupils abducting underage girls.

Though kujumisa, which refers to a man letting his girlfriend to sleep over at his house is common, the same is now being practised by pupils with the underage girls.
This has become so rife that the police now say it is one of the highest crimes that they have to deal with in the area.

Police Constable Thando Dlamini, who works under the Domestic Violence and Children’s Welfare Department, revealed this yesterday.
Speaking during a back to school crime prevention drive held at Buhleni Complex, Dlamini said this was a serious concern.

He said not only is it now being done by boys but that even the girls now allow boys to spend nights inside their houses at their parental homes.
Dlamini said some pupils had even put bricks near their bedroom windows which are used as makeshift ladders for their girlfriends to easily get through.
“Then the question is what are you the parents doing about it?” Dlamini asked rhetorically.

He said this was serious offence because it was illegal for pupils to spend nights with each other.
Dlamini said the challenge the police were facing was that the parents appeared to be unaware of such activities taking place within their homesteads.

He said in some cases, parents became defensive to a point that they treated the matter as tibi tendlu, meaning that crimes are not reported but dealt with at family level. Dlamini said it was shocking that some parents only showed up as a family when they had to go to the police.
He said there were cases where parents had to ask for cases to be handled at family level instead and warned that this was not right.

Throngs of residents, including the youth, attended the crime prevention drive in preparation for schools opening today.
About two weeks ago, a pupil was arrested for allegedly abducting a female pupil, whom he spent the night with.
During his appearance before court, he admitted that the fellow pupil was his girlfriend.
