LOBAMBA - A former civil servant who was reported to be dead was found alive and well after posting a series of updates on popular social media, Facebook.

This was revealed yesterday during the appearance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy Principal Secretary Winnie Stewart before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The officer, Mduduzi Zulu, according to information the ministry had at that time stated that he had since died and as a result his debt had been written off.

However, Zulu has not escaped easily as his Facebook page led the ministry to tracing him. Zulu owes government a total of E4 432, which was allegedly an overpayment made on his salary. The PS through her officers, reported that he had been fired from the civil service because he used to abscond from his duties. The PAC was told that the officer was once located in Matsapha and with the assistance of the Sigodvweni police, signed an acknowledgement of debt where he said he would pay a monthly repayment of E1 000.

However, it was reported that he later disappeared until he was located on Facebook.
“We have since found out that he works with some consultants in Pretoria and he has agreed that he will pay back the money,” the PAC was told.

It remained unclear why it was reported earlier that the officer had passed on when he was alive. The ministry said they had approached the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to relieve the officer of his duties, as he had constantly absconded from work, and this was granted particularly since the officer was on probation at that time.
