MANZINI – The replacement of the 40 expelled Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) recruits is well underway as an estimated 130 new recruits have been admitted to the USDF Infantry School in Mbuluzi.

Well-placed sources said the process of replacing the expelled aspiring soldiers began on Monday  where about 40 recruits made their way to Mbuluzi. These were followed by another 90 on Tuesday and more were expected to be admitted.

There was reportedly not one dry eye on Thursday last week when investigations done by the USDF revealed that there were recruits who joined the army using illegal routes. Some of the aspiring soldiers are said to have revealed that they had paid sums of up to E50 000 to secure a job in the military. The source said, that, however, did not work in their favour as at about 3:30pm on that same day, a bus waited for them as they packed their belongings and drove them straight to the Manzini Bus Rank.

The source said parents of the recruits were called and informed of the decision that had been taken by the military and that they could either fetch their children or wait for them at the Manzini Bus Rank where they would pick them up. The source said most of the parents, who were obviously disappointed, protested that they no longer even had money to transport their children back home. He said some of the recruits admitted to paying the money to get the jobs in the military.

The source further revealed that they were expecting more recruits to arrive yesterday (Wednesday) but that did not happen. The source described last Thursday’s mood as one that was dreadful, especially because the recruits had already spent three weeks at Mbuluzi Infantry School, training to be soldiers only to be sent packing.
