MAKHONZA – The long weekend was marred for two families after their loved ones were torched while inside their houses in separate incidents, but one of them survived.

In the first incident, an elderly woman believed to have been deliberately burnt died in an overnight house fire at Makhonza area on Saturday.
Makhonza is situated about 15km to the east of Nhlangano. Lizzy Matsebula (85) was the sole occupant of the house which reportedly caught fire on Saturday night, in a suspected arson attack.

The motive of the attack, however, could not be immediately established.
The woman reportedly lived in her own house, which is separate from the other one accommodating other family members.
Information gathered was that she had insisted on living on her own.

The severely burnt body believed to be that of the elderly woman was found by her grandchildren after the house was destroyed by the blaze, on Saturday morning.

Witnesses said when the children arrived in the house, everything was razed to ashes. The woman also had suffered significant burns and at first she could not be easily recognised.
A number of residents rushed to the homestead after the alarm was raised. Interviewed community members said the burning of the woman was quite distressing, and prayed for law enforcement agents to be able to solve the mysterious death of the 85-year-old woman.
“It was horrifying to see the remains of the burnt body of the woman,” said a resident.
