MBABANE – Either the sub-conscious mind is playing tricks on them or indeed the spirits of the dead do haunt the living when not pleased with a particular issue.

This remains the belief of each individual but for the Masuku family at Khalang’lile, they believe in the spirits of their ancestors as they claim that they are haunted by them during the night.
Eleven graves were recently dug-up by Swaziland Railway workers to exhume remains of the Masuku family’s relatives who were buried years ago.
The reason behind exhumation is that the rail company intends to construct a railway line, which according to feasibility study would encroach onto the family’s graveyard thus the relocation of the graves.
According to the family, they find doors wide open in the middle of the night and at times find themselves sleeping on the floor yet had got into a bed. At times they are heavily assaulted by invisible beings, which they believe are their ancestors’ spirits.  They are of the idea that their ancestors are angry with the new arrangement where there had been an ‘invasion’ of outsiders.

Sleep

Gab’sile Francis Masuku, the mother at the homestead, said after the bodies were exhumed, they could not get sleep at night.
Masuku said the family’s arrangement with the rail company was that they would exhume the 11 relatives’ bodies and bury them not too far from  a new gravesite. However, after the bodies were exhumed, the newly set up gravesite which, she alleged the arrangement was that it would be exclusive to the Masuku family but has now been used to bury people who are not related to them.
“There are now different people with different surnames; you find surnames such as Mndzebele, Dlamini just to name a few. We cannot sleep my child, ghosts wonder all over the homestead premises during the night.”

The old woman said the family needed help and highlighted that the hovering of dead people ‘spirits started on a Friday night two weeks ago, which was a day after the graves had been relocated.
Because of the sleepless nights they are having, Masuku said she has called the area’s umgijimi (messenger) to help her report the matter to the area’s chiefdom, in order for them to get help.

Summoned

“Umgijimi came back to inform us that the Inner Council had summoned us to umphakatsi (Royal Kraal).”
