MBABANE – Clergymen are not pleased with the new Marriage Bill as it contradicts what the Bible states.

All along, married people would file for divorce based on wrongdoing of one party resulting in the marriage being irretrievably broken down. The two most common conditions which allowed a person who felt they could no longer live with their spouses were that the other spouse had committed adultery or desertion for a continuous period of at least two years.

However, the Marriage Bill of 2017 has additional conditions allowing a person to file for divorce.
These circumstances entail when one party had changed religion. The bill states that if both parties followed the same faith at the time of marriage and during the course of the marriage, the divorce applicant cannot tolerate the change of religion, he is eligible to apply for divorce.

On another note, if one party is exposed to either physical or mental cruelty which might affect his health, the bill permits them to file for divorce. Sexual perversion on one party may also be a factor considered to grant divorce.
These additional factors have not been received well by pastors as they said this was a recipe for catastrophe. The pastors felt the amended Marriage Bill was against the teachings of the Bible.

According to Mbabane Alliance’s Reverend Johannes Mazibuko, the supplementary factors were a sign that more was yet to come. Considering the already alarming statistics of divorces in the country, Mazibuko said they were nothing compared to what was yet to happen. He said the introduction of these factors showed that people had resolved to fully rely on humanism. By this, he said worldly people were dependent on what they perceive would help solve their problems other than God.
