TWO STABBED TO DEATH AT FUNERAL

BUHLENI – A funeral is often considered a place where even enemies unite for the purpose of respecting the dead but this was not the case at an area known as Matfuntini around Herefords.

Two people were gruesomely stabbed and killed while funeral proceedings were ongoing at a homestead within the area. This happened on Saturday when a woman who had been working at one of the eateries was being laid to rest.
While mourners were wailing due to bereavement, screams of violence could be heard a few metres away and within minutes, one person, who was stabbed first, lay unconscious. Within a few minutes, another person was also seen lying in a pool of blood after being stabbed as well. Both incidents were sparked by one of the mourners, who came wearing a hat.

It is alleged that the violence started when one of the mourners entered the homestead wearing a hat over his head.
Some of the residents were not pleased with this and viewed it as a sign of disrespect. The man wearing the hat was asked why he was inappropriately dressed as this was considered culturally impolite.
As this was being argued, unpalatable words are said to have been exchanged between the man wearing a hat, his friends and residents. It is alleged that the person who was wearing the hat was among a group of mourners who are said to have arrived from Matsapha.

“The men appeared to have been drunk at the time of the fight,” said a resident. That is when a physical squabble ensued and the man wearing a hat got stabbed in the process. His friends are said to have retaliated and stabbed another mourner, believed to be the one who killed their friend.
The incident happened just when the coffin was meant to be taken out of the homestead for burial at around 4:30am.

The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Bandile Dlamini from Matsapha and 33-year-old Mzwandile Vilakati of Matfuntini.
The stabbing means that the mourning family still has another burden on them as it is alleged that one of the deceased is a relative.

Both victims are said to have been certified dead upon arrival at Mkhuzweni Health Centre around Mayiwane.
The matter was reported to the Buhleni Police Post whose officers responded but the victims are said to have been already dead when they arrived at the scene.
According to residents, who declined to speak on record, the incident was so violent that one of the victims allegedly had intestines protruding after the gruesome attack.
