MANZINI – Army boss Sobantu Dlamini wants out of his 33-year-old marriage due to alleged false and misleading representation by his wife during her first pregnancy.

Dlamini is the Commander of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF). He and his wife, Patience Phumelele Dlamini, were married through civil rites and in community of property in 1983.

He alleged that after he was told by his wife that he had fathered their first child, he believed that to be true and eventually got married to her on September 1983 and brought up the child as his own, paid maintenance, including schooling and medical expenses.
However, after DNA tests were reportedly conducted in 2012, Dlamini learnt that he could not be the father of the child.

“On or about 2012, plaintiff (Dlamini) learnt that at all times prior to the marriage and for many years during the marriage, the defendant (Patience), intentionally, fraudulently, falsely and maliciously misrepresented to the plaintiff that the latter fathered the child. The defendant failed to disclose a material fact to the plaintiff regarding the biological father,” Dlamini submitted.

These allegations are contained in an affidavit whose veracity is yet to be tested in court.
Narrating the events leading to his decision of having his marriage annulled, Dlamini submitted that on May 22, 1978, prior to the marriage, he left the country for military training at a military base called Intec Nine, Nakuru in the Republic of  Kenya.

That military training in Kenya ended on March 30, 1979 after which he returned home at the beginning of April 1979. Prior to his departure, he and Patience were in a relationship.
