MBABANE – “Job well done, we want to see what the minister will do next.”

This was the general feeling of the various sectors that were called by this publication yesterday, following the bold stance by Members of Parliament to reject the 2017/2018 budget.
The MPs rejected the entire budget presented last Friday by Minister of Finance Martin Dlamini, as they viewed it as not being a budget for the people.

They gave the minister 48 hours to return with a proper budget that was for the people.
First to throw in its view was the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA), through its Secretary General Vincent Ncongwane, who said the MPs have done a good job. Ncongwane said more than anything they were pleasantly surprised by the increase of the elderly grants which was placed at E860 from the proposed E400 per month.

“We want to see what the minister will do now because moving forward is essential,” Ncongwane said.
He said even if the MPs may be viewed as if they were contesting for the next elections, this was appropriate. He said it has been noted that previously, the MPs used to come in and out of Parliament without making decisions that would change the lives of the people they were representing.

“What they did has shown that at least they have the elderly in their minds,” Ncongwane said.
The rejection of the national budget has also raised hope for students. Sibusiso Siyaya, the President of the Student Representative Council of the University of Swaziland, said as students, they were hoping that the minister of Finance would return with a balanced budget that would cater for all the sectors.
