MBABANE – Will the elderly be getting E400 per month in the next financial year?

This is the figure that got some Members of Parliament (MPs) excited when they heard from some of their colleagues who are members of the House of Assembly Sessional Finance Committee that the Finance Ministry had proposed this figure.
The MPs discussed this proposed figure at the Royal Swazi Sun Convention Centre where they had been gathered for the launch of the Parliament HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan (2017-2022).

“It is looking good my colleagues, the figure is E400 for the elderly,” said one of the members of the Finance committee.
The elderly are currently paid E240 per month, and following the King’s Speech from the Throne that all social grants for the elderly, disabled and those with disabilities would be increased for the 2017-18 financial year, there has been a lot of speculation on how much they would get.

The MPs who were engaged in a conversation at Planter’s Restaurant said they were quite pleased with the amount as they had expected government to put in far less. Last time government increased the grants was during the 2014-2015 financial year when only a meagre E20 was added, much to the outrage of the nation.

If indeed the E400 is implemented, this will mean that government will have put in E160 more.
Chairperson of the Finance Sessional Committee Patrick Pha Motsa said he was not in a position to divulge what was discussed during the meeting.

Meanwhile the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office had initially proposed an increase of only E60 when it made its budget around October last year, but after the King’s directive, the DPM, Paul Dlamini, said the figure was reconsidered.
