MBABANE – The capital city’s skyline will be a proud possessor of a magnificent high rise building once the construction of the E280 million Mbabane Government Hospital Referral and Emergency Complex is complete.

There were ‘oohs and aahs’ as Sidumo Dlamini, an engineer from Bicon Consulting Engineers, revealed the designs of the four-storey building that will replace the old Out Patient Department (OPD) building at the Mbabane Government Hospital.

More impressive was the fact that the basement of the building would house a chapel for bereaved families, a 70-body mortuary and a private viewing and waiting area for families. This was revealed yesterday when the Prime Minister, Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini, attended the commemoration of the commencement of the Emergency and Referral Complex which will be constructed over a period of 18 months. The impressive structure will replace the almost 50-year-old OPD which will be demolished.

“On the face of it, mentioning destruction in the same breath as construction may sound harsh, but today that phenomenon is a cause for celebration and enthusiastic anticipation,” said the PM. The funds for the construction of the hospital wing have been donated by the Republic of China on Taiwan to a tune of about 20 million US Dollars, which is equivalent to E280 million.

The PM said three years ago he recalled visiting the then OPD and he was appalled at the condition of the building, its sanitation facilities and other equipment.
He said he personally made a commitment to accelerate the pace of rehabilitation of the hospital.
Dlamini said the new complex would not only contain greatly improved facilities for patients but would also provide a significantly better working environment for medical staff.
