MUSLIMS CLASH OVER MOSQUES

MBABANE – It’s a clash of the titans as indigenous and Asian Muslims clash over the administration of some mosques in the kingdom.

A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam.

There are strict and detailed requirements for a place of worship to be considered a mosque.
The bone of contention, it has since been gathered, is that the indigenous Muslims are accusing their Asian brothers in the faith of having taken over the running of the mosques and sidelined them.

Our bitter sources claim they are now being bullied by the Asians into bowing down to their calls when, in fact, they were the ones who facilitated to the construction of the affected centres.

The tension between the two groups is said to be boiling at one centre - in particular the Msahweni mosque.
“The Asians have literally taken over our mosque, a centre we facilitated for and constructed. Now, they want everything to be done their way,” said one aggrieved Muslim believer.

He said it seemed natives were at the mercy of Asians who make administrative decisions without consulting the seniors who are natives.
In fear of serious reprisal he requested to have his identity withheld.
“But as native Swazis we feel bullied and this is not just to say it happens at the Msahweni Mosque but we have other centres.
“We feel the matter is not being adequately addressed by the Islam leader in the country who is aware of the ‘cold war’ between the two groups,” he said.
