MBABANE – Senator Sibusiso Shongwe’s law firm, Sibusiso B Shongwe & Associates, has not been given the job of collecting rates for the Municipal Council of Mbabane for this financial year.

This was communicated during the council’s ordinary meeting which was held on Tuesday.
The firm was among the five who were referred to as the council’s arrear rates collecting attorneys during the last financial year. The others were MC Simelane, Howe Masuku, SV Mdladla and Waring Attorneys.

According to the council’s financial report for May 2016, about E0.5 million was collected by the firms.
SV Mdladla Attorneys kept a clean sheet on the job and has already been given a go-ahead to continue even in this financial year.

The report contains a table which shows rates balances handed over to the firms which show that about E5.3 million is yet to be collected.
The amount that was due for collection by Shongwe’s law firm amounts to E3.1 million and the firm collected E2.6 million to date, which shows a balance of E0.5 million. It was explained at the meeting that the reason not to engage Shongwe’s firm was due to the balance of the previous financial year and other issues.

Just last week, a man of Sidwashini took the council to court after it auctioned his house for outstanding rates amounting to E6 000.

Occupants

In his court papers, the applicant, Norman Jabulani Maseko, alleged that the occupants of the house were his nieces and nephews and did not have any place to go in the event they were evicted from the house.
He stated that on June 9, 2016 he received a call from his sister, one Zanele Dlamini, who informed him that there was a court document which had been served upon her children.
