SOCCER PLAYER COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER GIRL DUMPS HIM FOR COP

EZULWINI – A soccer player committed suicide after his girlfriend dumped him for a police officer.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning. The soccer player, Sibonginkosi ‘Sibobo’ Shongwe (28), was discovered by his neighbours in his one-room flat near his maternal homestead on the day. He allegedly ingested some unknown tablets, which led to his death.

Shongwe played for Sibovini FC, which plays in the Super League, and they had a game on Saturday.
According to his family members, Shongwe left a suicide note, stating that he committed suicide because he had been dumped. The girlfriend’s name and that of the police officer are known to the Times but will not be divulged due to ethical reasons. The girlfriend is a Form IV pupil in one of the top schools in Mbabane.

She recently turned 21 years and the police officer is estimated to be in his late 30s.
Before his death, Shongwe gave some people money and said they would use it to attend his funeral.

He is said to have given his uncle and some friends an amount of E200 and told them they would use it to travel to his funeral.
Shongwe’s uncle, Moosa Dube, said the family knew the girlfriend as the two had been dating for close to five years. The family even has several pictures of the girl.

Dube said he spent some time with his nephew on Friday and he acted strangely. He said he just sat in front of the TV and did not talk.
“I saw him earlier on the day and asked if he was going for training and he said he was not. He usually took his food to his flat but on the day he ate and left,” Dube said.

He said on Sunday morning, a neighbour told him that he was going to check on Shongwe as he heard that he had ingested some tablets. Dube said he told the neighbour that they should not tell his (Dube) mother before they were sure of what was going on.
