EMABELENI – A man punished his neighbours cows by binding their forelegs with spring wire.

The incident occurred at Emabeleni over the weekend and the animals, for four days, were unable to move around.
They also spent the four days without any water. The two beasts belong to businessman Lucky Hlatshwayo.

Hlatshwayo said his neighbour alleged that the cattle grazed on his sorghum and hence the punishment. The cattle were found lying down near the homestead when Hlatshwayo went to free them yesterday. Even after they were freed, they could not walk properly.

The businessman said what happened to his animals was wrong in every sense. He said cattle could not be punished.
“Why did he decide to punish my cattle? Since I am their owner, he should have had me arrested instead. He could have talked to me and we would have settled on some kind of compensation if the cattle did indeed graze on his crops,” Hlatshwayo said.
There were also allegations that this was not the first time the cattle were punished in this way by the same man.

Meanwhile, Nobuhle Nkonyane, a community police member from the area, said she was shocked by the man’s actions. She said if cattle fed on someone’s crops, they would normally hold talks on how the person could be compensated.
“The Hlatshwayos came to me and asked that I accompany them to where their cattle were being kept,” she said.

She said they found them tied with the spring wire and she was shocked as she had never witnessed such before in her life.
Hlatshwayo spent some time trying to free his cattle yesterday. The wire was stiff and it took about five minutes to free each animal.
“This is extremely cruel to the animals,” said Debra Caldwell of the Swaziland Animal Welfare Society (SAWS). She said it was cruel to bind the cattle such that they could not move around to access water or food.

“Punishing the animals is not right because they do not know that what they are doing is wrong,” Caldwell  said.
She said the correct thing to do if an animal feeds on your crops is to engage their owners and not punish the animals.

Fellow citizens, I feel in as much as the man was frustrated about the alleged eating of his crops, he had no right whatsoever to bind the beasts in any way. We all know that animals do not know what wrong is and what right is.

...And in any case, the best way to resolve such is through communication. I'm sure that if the right channel was followed, the man could have been compensated in some way.

...anyone who punishes animals should be apprehended. Animal cruelty should not be tolerated in any way!!!!!!
