MANZINI – The Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) has a budget of E84 000 for today’s May Day celebrations at Salesian Sports Ground, Manzini.

The event will be themed, ‘End corporate greed’.
Patrick Mamba, TUCOSWA Treasurer, said the money would be used to buy food for guests and artists who would perform at the event that is expected to begin at 9am.

He said artists who would perform include Mshikishi Mndzebele, Nomsa M, Tip Top, Two in One and reggae artist Phesheya.
The union expects attendance to be between 3 000 and 4 000 workers. TUCOSWA’s affiliate unions that would participate include the National Public Services and Allied Workers Union, Swaziland Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (SUFIAW), and the Amalgamated Trade Union of Swaziland among others.

Winnie Magagula, Minister of Labour and Social Security, was expected to be the guest speaker at the annual event, which has been controversial in Swaziland since it was officially recognised by government in 1994.

However, by last night, it was still doubtful if the minister would eventually attend. She declined to specifically respond to this question when asked by this reporter – twice – yesterday.

Vincent Ncongwane, TUCOSWA Secretary General, said there were three key issues on the agenda for today’s celebrations. These include the issue of decent jobs and wages for all workers, as well as the issue of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
