MBABANE – Police say the Asian businessman, who allegedly hacked his fellow countryman in Siteki, is known to be violent and feared by a lot of people.

As a result, the police said the release of Akber Ali (one of the four suspects) would not be in the interest of justice.
This was disclosed by the Lubo- mbo Regional Branch Crime Officer, Superintendent Clement Sihlongonyane, in his opposing affidavit after Ali and his co-accused filed bail applications at the High Court.

Superintendent Sihlongonyane further mentioned that the businessman was quite an influential and intimidating person and his release may result in their evidence being interfered with.

Ali (44), who runs the popular Mpumalanga Wholesale and other retail outlets around Siteki, was arrested together with Zafar Iqbal (23), Ehsan Ahmed (21) and Wasim Ranjhi (26). They are all originally from Pakistan, according to court papers.
The four are alleged to have hacked Naeem Gul Khan, a businessman of Asian origin, with bush knives while at Ntamakuphila residential area, near Siteki town.

In his opposing affidavit, Superintendent Sihlongonyane mentioned that they (police) had already recorded statements from a number of witnesses who, however, requested not to be mentioned as they were scared that Ali would victimise them in the event he was released.
He also denied that Ali and his co-accused had prospects of success at trial in respect of the offences they were charged with.
“For starters, the purported defence by the applicant (Ali) is devoid of the truth, as it will be demonstrated hereunder.
