COPS REMOVE RED CARPET AT EVENTS

MBABANE – The use of red carpets, and even white ones, has come under strict monitoring as the Royal Swaziland Police service has been removing such carpets during glamorous social events.

The use of red carpets has, over the years, become synonymous with glamorous social events as the trend of using these carpets dates back to ancient Greece. The use of the red carpet is part of a global trend in social events.
In a recent incident, police removed a white carpet that had been rolled out to welcome guests and VIPs during this year’s Business Woman of the Year Awards.

Ironically, the event’s organisers had suffered a similar fate the previous year where they had rolled out a red carpet, which was, however, removed by the police. It was for this reason that they opted to use a white carpet this year, which was also removed.
There is no law that gives the police the basis for their action.

REDI Director Sikhomba Gumbi, who is one of the organisers of the awards, confirmed that red carpets were associated with royalty and that they had their carpet removed by the police before. “We then desisted from using them in any of our events following that incident,” Gumbi said.
He, however, said he was surprised in September this year, during the same event, where they had hired an events management company, Temabhokane for the decor, which used a white carpet, when it was also removed by the police.

“The prime minister was guest speaker and we found ourselves having to use an uncovered floor because when the incident occurred it was too late to make another plan,” Gumbi said.
