fight over fat cakes

GILGAL – A Grade V pupil at Hlutse Primary School, near Siphofaneni, has been hospitalised after he was stabbed by another pupil in a fight over fat cakes.

The incident, which is said to have left both pupils and teachers at the school shocked and traumatised, reportedly occurred about a week ago.
*Thando (14) was stabbed once in the left side of his chest with what other pupils described as a knife.
He has been hospitalised since then but his father said on Saturday that his condition had improved and that doctors had promised to discharge him very soon.

According to pupils at the school, Thando was stabbed by a bully who had demanded that he hand over all his fat cakes to him.
The bully is said to be doing Form I at a nearby school but constantly visits Hlutse Primary School to harass pupils there.

A pupil who witnessed the stabbing incident explained that the fight over fat cakes occurred some days before the stabbing incident.
“The bully saw Thando buying fat cakes with his friends and he demanded that Thando hand over the fat cakes to him. Thando refused. The bully wanted to beat Thando but he was restrained by other pupils. The bully left and then returned on the day Thando was stabbed,” said a pupil.

Confronted

On the day of the stabbing, a pupil said the bully confronted Thando and asked him about why he had refused with the fat cakes the other day.
According to the pupil, Thando again stood up to the bully and refused to entertain his questions.
Embarrassed by Thando’s courage and display of confidence, the bully is said to have slapped Thando once while in front of other pupils.
“Thando retaliated and they began fighting. While other pupils were about to separate them, we saw Thando bleeding profusely.
