MBABANE – A mass funeral will be held for the four maidens and indvuna of Vikizijula, it has been confirmed.
It was also disclosed that one funeral service will be held for the two tindvuna of Ezibondeni.

Both funerals will be held in Duze in the Lubombo Region and Ezibondeni in the Shiselweni region tomorrow.
Majahonke Dlamini confirmed this development on behalf of the committee responsible for the logistics of burying the 10 maidens and three tindvuna who died while participating in the annual cultural reed dance ceremony last Friday.

“Five of the seven people from Vikizijula will be buried simultaneously at Duze, while the other two will be taken to separate cemeteries,” he said.  Dlamini said the mass funeral will follow a mass vigil today at Duze Primary School.
This is the school some of the deceased maidens attended.

He explained that Bongiwe Gamedze’s family requested to bury her at their own cemetery, while Nolwazi Maziya will be buried at Sithobelweni.
“One funeral will also be held for the tindvuna from Shiselweni as well,” Dlamini further said.

However, he clarified that the vigil for the Vikizijula maidens and indvuna had been moved from Mkhaya Sports Ground to Duze Primary School.
Initially, Gundwane Gamedze, Siphofaneni Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), had proposed that there be one burial place for all the maidens and indvuna. He had suggested that such would not only be cost effective for the State but would also be their pride as a Heroes’ Acre.

He referred to the deceased as troops of the monarch, who by being buried together, would be appreciated for dying for their King. Meanwhile, the other funerals are expected to proceed as scheduled where they will be a single vigil and separate burial areas.

Dlamini further said government had released five buses and two kombis to ferry relatives and Imbali from the affected communities to the national memorial service of the deceased maidens and tindvuna. The national memorial service will be at noon today at the Old Trade Fair grounds in Manzini.
