LOBAMBA – Appointed Member of Parliament Prince Hlangabeza is not pleased that a total of 46 foreigners  were granted Swazi citizenship in the past three months.

The prince submitted that as far as he was concerned, the number was too high and wanted to know what special services these people were bringing to the country.

This was during the debate of the first quarter perfomance report, which was deliberated by the House of Assembly portfolio committee, which is chaired by Mafutseni MP Christopher Gamedze.

Prince Hlangabeza asked the minister of Home Affairs, Princess Tsandzile, what the people who were granted citizenship by the Citizenship Board were bringing that was so great that Swazis would appreciate. “I must state that we do want to make relations all over the world and that people should be allowed to visit, but why do we then allow them to start setting up home in Swaziland,” he said.

In vernacular the MP said; ‘anginoni futsi atihlamusi letinombolo’ , which means that the figures were not pleasing to him.
He wanted to know what Swazis did not possess that made the Board so flexible to grant these citizenships.

He asked what criteria was used, stating that the very indigenous Swazis did not even have basic accomodation yet government was prepared to issue citizenship certificates to foreigners. He said automatically this meant that 460 people had been granted Swazi citizenship because on average a man had nine or 10 dependants. “How is it possible that in April we granted 27, in May 7 and in June 18, I do not think we are doing the right thing,” he said.
