DAVID MASONDO IS DEAD

image Soul Brothers lead singer David Masondo died after an illness in a South African hospital yesterday.

MBABANE – Legendary Mbhaqanga artist and South Africa’s Soul Brothers lead singer David Masondo is dead.


His family confirmed through his manager in various online South African publications that the Soul Brothers lead singer died yesterday afternoon at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.


The 67-year-old was rushed to hospital for fatigue last month, following a performance in Port Elizabeth.
His career with Soul Brothers, dubbed the ‘Mbhaqanga Kings’, spanned for over three decades.


Having produced more than 35 albums over the years, which have sold more than three million copies worldwide, the Soul Brothers lost fellow band members Tuza Mthethwa in 1979 and Zakes Mchunu in 1984.


Soul Brothers also had a Swazi national in their band by the name of Babsy Sikhumbuzo ‘Babas’ Mavuso who died in 2012. Mavuso was a vocalist. He was laid to rest at his parental home at Ghobholo in Msunduza.
