MANZINI – “I have learnt my lesson by going to jail and I now know better,” former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Sibusiso Shongwe said in church yesterday.

Shongwe, who was at Calvary Worship Centre at The George Hotel for his first Sunday service since his release from prison, could not control his emotions as he spoke of how his incarceration cemented his belief and faith in God and made him realise that his conduct while minister was not without reproach.

In his opening remarks, Shongwe said he was happy to be in the presence of God. “I do not know where to start but what I can say bazalwane, I have learnt my lesson and have graduated in knowing God,” he said.

Shongwe continued in a very serious tone and said, although it was a painful lesson to learn, he had learnt his lesson.
He kept repeating this phrase before the church and further thanked his church leader Apostle Elijah Maseko for paying him a visit every single day while he was in prison.

The former minister thanked his family, the church and his wife for all the support he received while incarcerated.
He said he knew that a number of those in church wondered what sort of lesson he had learnt and he said the most important lesson he learnt was that God was in control of everything that happened on this earth. “Konkhe kwengca emehlweni akhe avume,” meaning all happens before His watchful eye and He allows His people to be persecuted.

He said it was due to that lesson that he did not hate anyone, felt angry towards anyone or blamed anyone for his imprisonment.
