DOG TAX ‘JOKE’ CAUSES PANIC IN MBABANE

MBABANE – Panic has erupted following circulation of a message about the seizure of four special breed dogs allegedly by the police and officers of the Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA).

There is a warning making rounds that people who own dogs should be careful and keep a sharp eye on any car or people who enquire about their dogs.

Both the police and the SRA have disassociated themselves from this matter, saying they were not involved in any operation of this nature.
In the warning message, it is said that the people who seized the dogs demanded E8 000 fine, which is E2 000 for each dog.
They allegedly told the family of Eveni that they would get back their dogs after paying the money.

The woman who owns the dogs said the whole saga got out of hand as she had deliberately used the name of the SRA and the police to convince her children why the dogs were away.

She said this was meant to be a small family issue as a form of punishing her children because they were refusing to clean the dog houses.
“When the children returned, the dogs were not here so I just made up a story and I told to the children that the police and SRA had taken them away because I wanted them to realise that they would lose the dogs if they continued not to clean the area where the dogs live,” she said.

The woman said she had not anticipated the effects of the ‘small lie’ that she told her children, which she said she was aware could lead to a nasty situation between her family and the police and SRA.
