MANZINI – As if responding to the frustration voiced out by parliamentarians over the high number of people of Asian origin who have taken over Swazi businesses, police have engaged on a massive raid and crackdown on illegal immigrants.

In fact, yesterday morning, the police conducted a raid and arrested over 20 illegal immigrants, who included Indians, Pakistanis, Mozambicans and Ugandans, among many other nationalities.

They were arrested at their flats in places such as KaKhoza, Manzini City Centre, Rontanya and Philani Flats situated in town. Most of the suspects were arrested while they were sleeping between 3 and 4am by a team of police officers from the Manzini Police Station.
Reliable sources revealed that the police had received information that there were illegal immigrants, most of whom were operating businesses around and outside town without permits.

The illegal immigrants appeared before Magistrates Mthokozisi Dlamini and Lucia Lukhele, in different courtrooms, charged with contravening the Immigration Act.
Magistrate Dlamini noted that the accused had broken immigration laws by entering and remaining in the country while they were not in possession of valid permits or passports. Most of them operated small businesses around town.

The illegal immigrants who appeared before Magistrate Dlamini included Dolka Saeed (21), Minyanji Ismail (24), Siraj Vohora (17) and Minyanji Senjad (17) of India. They were arrested while at Philani Flats.
