TEEN BLEEDS TO DEATH
MBABANE – A teenager bled to death when his neck was cut by a bottle of a beverage he was enjoying at the back of a moving van on Thursday.
Information gathered from a police officer privy to the incident but not authorised to speak to the media, is that the boy, aged 19 was sitting at the back of the van enjoying beverages when the vehicle hit a hump. This resulted in the man falling off and hitting a rock with his head. The incident happened at Mpolonjeni on Thursday at about 5:30pm.
The source said he suspected that the young man hit the rock with his head while the bottle he was carrying broke next to him.
"The bottle cut a vein in his neck when he fell off but I suspect the intense injuries were from the impact when he fell off."
At the back of the van, the boy was with another man while his sister was in front with the driver. "The car was not speeding and I cannot tell what really happened. We gathered that he was sitting with someone and they were chatting and in a jolly mood before he fell. I suspect he was not holding onto anything, so when the car hit the hump, he lost stability and fell," the source explained.
He was rushed to the Mbabane Government Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.
Inspector Phindile Vilakati, Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer, confirmed the fatal accident. She said a case of culpable homicide was opened against the driver of the van.
"We are investigating a culpable homicide case," Vilakati said. She then advised the public to desist from sitting in positions that could lead to them falling off moving vehicles.
