PIGG’S PEAK – Bees have claimed the life of a 68-year-old man of Macembeni in Pigg’s Peak.

The bees attacked about 20 residents of Macembeni.

Mabhengu Hlophe was not fortunate to survive the attack.

The bees are said to be kept by one of the residents and on the day in question, it is believed that they were disturbed by avocados that smashed their hive.

The residents were forced out of their houses and they ran into a nearby forest under attack from the swarm of bees.

"The young and old headed in separate directions but the forest remained the preferred shelter for all the residents as each and everyone of them was being stung by the menacing bees," narrated one of the residents.

The deceased is believed to have been under an avocado tree and was on his way to the shop when the incident occurred.

It was revealed that due to his age, he could not run away during the attack.

One of the residents is said to have brought a blanket and tried rescuing him while others are said to have then tried running with him and paramedics were then called.

Swaziland Fire and Emergency Service personnel and police were also called to the scene and Hlophe was rushed to the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, where he was admitted.

About 20 other residents were also rushed to the same hospital and were treated and discharged.

Hlophe spent a day at the hospital and succumbed to death on Thursday at around 8am.

Confirming the death, a cousin of the deceased, Philemon Dlamini, said they were saddened by Hlophe’s death.

Dlamini, who is also a resident of Macembeni, said he once went to the Pigg’s Peak Town Council and complained about the bees.
