MANZINI – Minister of Public Works and Transport Lindiwe Dlamini was involved in an accident while rushing to a road safety council initiative held at Mpaka yesterday morning.

The minister was being driven in her luxurious BMW X5 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) when it collided with an old model Toyota bakkie with a canopy near the Helemisi Free Evangelical (FEA) Assemblies premises yesterday.

The accident occurred at around 9am. The minister was rushing to Mpaka, where she was expected to officially hand over bicycles to community police members, who will be helping the Road Safety Council to keep cattle and other livestock off the road.

Dlamini was quickly whisked off in another vehicle after the accident and was able to officially carry out her duties as expected during the event.
According to information gathered at the scene, the Toyota van was moving slowly in the middle of the road waiting for traffic to clear as it was turning into the FEA premises when the vehicle slammed into the fast moving BMW SUV on its left side.

Interviewed at the scene, Mbuso Nhlengetfwa, the driver of the Toyota, said the BMW was travelling at a high speed on the lane used by oncoming traffic while he was turning into FEA.

“The car in front of me had already opened up space and had the driver of the BMW been patient, they would have overtaken me on the right side as opposed to us smashing into each other,” he said.

Nhlengetfwa said he was not injured although the right side door of his vehicle was shoved right inwards due to the impact of the collision.
He said he was employed at Webster Print and was making his daily errands when he was involved in the accident.

what was the importance of describing the other car as an old model toyota barkkie, you trying to say they are unroadworthy.

Perhaps they should have spent less money on some less powerful cars and the rest of the money on some driver training. It seems these cars will continually cost the tax payer more money.
