NO PERFECT PEACE IN SWAZILAND?
MBABANE – An Australian organisation, which partners with the United Nations (UN), has devalued the Kingdom of Swaziland’s preserved peace.
Out of 162 surveyed countries, Swaziland has been ranked 87, below Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia but has been ranked above South Africa and United States of America (USA).
South Africa is ranked 122 while the US is number 101 in the Global Peace Index.
It is reported that peace and conflict in South Africa, over the past five years, have been driven by poverty, inequality and the slow pace of reform by government. This is fuelling crime, violent strike action and political confrontation - the last in part a hangover from the practices of violent protest against the apartheid state
The report, which is recognised by the UN and world governments, also puts South Africa among countries with a peace deficit, alongside the USA, Israel, Thailand, India and a few others. Swaziland is not listed among the countries with a peace or democracy deficit.
However, the kingdom’s peace is listed as ‘third grade’ in terms of quality.
Swaziland has been listed among 30 countries whose peace deteriorated in 2014. In 2008, these countries recorded large positive peace deficits. The report does not state what led the country’s peace to deteriorate.
Factors that affect a country’s peace are listed as poverty, inequality, political instability, job losses, strike actions, huge army budgets, and many other things. In Swaziland, it is official that at least 700 000 Swazis, out of a population of 1.2 million, are very poor.
