MBABANE – Another life was lost on Malagwane Hill yesterday when the driver of a four-tonne truck lost control of it before it overturned.

The accident happened around the curve leading to Baha’i Schools; just metres away from the late Kal Grant’s homestead.
The South African-registered truck was ferrying 50 kilogrammes of Caustic Soda Flakes (a chemical used to make soap).

The truck was suspected to be from South Africa, with its driver and a passenger as occupants. Police and members of the public interviewed at the scene of the accident said the driver of the truck lost control while negotiating the bend.
Some suspected that the road was slippery following the light drizzle experienced around the lunch hour yesterday.

It was also suspected that the trailer that was being pulled by the truck contributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle.  By the time police officers and Fire and Emergency Services personnel arrived at the scene, cargo was all over the road. Traffic driving down the hill, towards the Manzini direction, had to be diverted to the lanes used by motorists driving towards Mbabane.

Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendant Khulani Mamba confirmed the accident.
“When the accident happened, two people were on board and one of them was certified dead upon arrival at the Mbabane Government Hospital.”

Mamba said the duo was rushed to the hospital by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel.
He said they were still making means to identify the people involved in the accident.
“We noted that the truck was inscribed Zebra Freight on its doors.”

Mamba appealed to motorists to drive cautiously along the notorious hill. In recent years, a number of fatalities involving trucks have taken place on Malagwane Hill.
Last year, at the end of April, a major pile-up that resulted in more than 20 vehicles being gutted by fire happened at the foot of the hill.
