‘THEY WANTED TO BURY ME’
MBABANE – Khabonina Mabuza, the former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, says the media “buried her in a pit of misery and frustration.”
As a result, Mabuza, once hailed as an astute autocrat by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said she wanted to forget about last year’s sufferings.
The former finance PS is highly regarded by the World Bank and financial sector in and outside the country.
She was demoted to the post of Undersecretary in the Ministry of Health.
She had been in charge of the administrative wing of the Ministry of Finance – the biggest ministry in any political set-up as it deals with money allocated to all government portfolios.
She was replaced by a subordinate in the Ministry of Finance in Bheki Bhembe, the now Principal Secretary.
Mabuza now reports to Dr Simon Zwane, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health.
She is said to have formed a good working relationship with Majozi Sithole, the former Minister of Finance and now Governor of the Central Bank of Swaziland.
Trouble for her started when she was quoted by the media as suggesting that more than E208 million went missing from the Ministry of Finance.
She was responding to queries from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
She allegedly told the PAC that the matter was too sensitive because it involved ‘labadzala’ (elders), without being specific.
