MAD RUSH FOR FORM I, IV SPACES

MBABANE – With the external examination results released last week, there was a mad rush yesterday in schools for spaces in Forms I and IV.

Some of the parents said they arrived at the schools at 6am and some were turned away and told to return on a later date. Most of the pupils who were looking for spaces were those who did not do well in the interviews which were conducted by the schools last year.

Those who were successful in their interviews were registered in some schools and given bank deposit slips to make payments at banks.
The pupils with their parents carried their STD V and Form III results with the hope that they would be accepted.

Parents who were interviewed at KaSchiele High School said they were interested in the school because it had been performing well and had affordable school fees. The symbols of the pupils were taken from them and were later told that if their names were called and their symbols returned to them, they should try again.
“I have been told to return on Thursday and perhaps I will be lucky. I got here at 6.30am and I returned home empty handed. This is bad because I do not know what I will do with my child now. I will, however, try my luck in other schools,” one parent, who did not want to be named, said.

Wandile Dlamini, a father of twins, said his children had applied at the school but they had not been called for an interview.
“I have been turned back today but I will return on Thursday because I have not lost hope. I will now try my luck at Mbabane Central,” he said.
At Swazi National High School, the pupils who were searching for spaces for this year were turned back at the gate and told to return either tomorrow or Thursday.

In most of the schools visited by the Times yesterday, the head teachers said they were giving first preference to those who had passed the interviews.
St Mark’s High School Head teacher Dominic Nxumalo said yesterday would be the last day that they would register any Form Is.
