MANZINI- The adage ‘The grass is not always greener on the other side’ has proven true for Swazi workers who flocked to factories in neighbouring countries that promised better wages.

The horror stories that have been retold by the workers, especially those who were retrenched in Swaziland, are very shocking.
This has resulted in a number of the workers, who are currently in the country, vowing that they did not intend to go back to their places of employment in those countries but will rather remain in Swaziland.

*Lindiwe Dlakudze is one of the factory workers who left Swaziland to seek employment in Newcastle after being retrenched.
“I do not intend to go back to that situation I have been in for the past month.

“I worked for 24 hours in one shift,” she said with barely concealed anger.
Lindiwe said there was no specific time when they clock in or out of work where she works adding that what made them even more susceptible to abuse is the fact that they lived within the factory premises.

“Swazis are exploited even more than the South Africans because they get to leave and go home earlier yet they earn more money than us,” Lindiwe said..
She said the minimum wage of E1 700 per fortnight was only earned by the South Africans while Swazis only earned E1 200 per fortnight.
“South African factory workers are angry with us Swazis.
