WHAT DOES JEHOVAH SAY ABOUT DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE?

Sir,

What does Jehovah Yahweh the Creator of the heaven and earth say about divorce and remarriage? Malachi 2:16, KJV, says: “For the Lord , the God of Israel, says that He hates divorce and marital separation and him who covers violence with his garment. Therefore, keep a watch upon your spirit that you deal not treacherously with your wife.” Divorce is not an option and is not permissible under any circumstances. Why do we demean the fact that God the father uses the word hate to describe how He feels about divorce?

Divorce

In Mathew 19:7 KJV the Pharisees argued with Jesus that Moses allowed them to divorce their wives. In verse 8-9 of chapter 19 KJV Jesus said unto them; “Moses, because of the stubbornness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever dismisses his wife, except for fornication and marries another commits adultery and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” Please note that the word used in verse 9 is fornication and not adultery. The difference between the two words is that fornication refers to an act of sexual intercourse between two unmarried people.

Adultery, on the other hand, refers to an act of sexual intercourse between a married person and anyone else besides his/her spouse. Please note that the argument of the Pharisees and the response of Jesus was based on Deuteronomy 24:1: “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favour in his eyes, because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a bill of divorce, puts it in her hand and send her out of his house.”

Read

According to the law of Moses, a man was permitted to divorce his newly-wedded wife if on the night of the honeymoon he discovered that she was not a virgin due to her having committed fornication. You may also read Deuteronomy 22:13-21 which elaborates on what I have just said. The Bible is self explanatory and the problem is that Christians do not take time to read it and get the truth for themselves. In most cases Mathew 19:9 is quoted out of context by people who want to use the Bible for their selfish ends.

It is worth noting that in the preceding chapter of Mathew 18, Jesus was teaching about forgiveness. God expects married people, especially Christians, to forgive unconditionally, including the sin of adultery. How come no one preaches about forgiveness from the pulpit anymore? In Mark 11:26 and Luke 6:15 Jesus issues a stern warning about not forgiving, saying God the father will not forgive those who do not forgive others their trespasses. Christians always pick and choose the scriptures. They choose to believe only verses that speak about blessings and ignore those that give warnings.

God also speaks clearly about the issue of remarriage. Luke 16:18, KJV, says: “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery and whoever marries her, who is divorced from her husband, commits adultery.” In 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, KJV, it says; “Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord; a wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband and a husband is not to divorce his wife.” Remarriage is only permitted after the death of a spouse. Those who are divorced for whatever reason are to remain single until the death of their spouses. According to God, all Christians, unbelievers and pastors who have divorced and remarried are living in adultery.
