WE ALL HAVE BAD DAYS, NEGATIVE SIDE

Sir,

Our ideologies and basic definitions about humans are constantly altered once we really delve into emotional intelligence and basic human psychological knowledge. By looking into such topics, we realise that our outlook on people tends to be one sided and unjust. The other day for instance, I came across a profound statement which said something along the lines of ‘it is unfair to define a person based on what we refer to as ‘true colours’, as more often than not our supposed true colours are only narrowed down to our negative reactions, bad days and ultimately impulsive actions.

Definition

How then can we limit the definition of people to just those things when there are a million positive and good things that person has done? Why do we have to be labelled based on our negative sides when more than likely, our good outweighs the bad’.  That is probably an extensive and much more elaborate version of the quote, but I wanted to provoke thought and bring clarity to what this person was trying to say.  To say I couldn’t agree more with this statement would be an understatement. I am equally dumbfounded, as the person who came up with this thought, that with all the good a person has done, one moment of weakness tends to erase a lifetime of good. Is this in any way fair?  Some will argue that there are people who commit crimes, and atrocities and should those also be overlooked simply because maybe they were just having a bad day? Well that is not entirely what this quote means.

The quote is mostly referring to character, more often than not, acting out of character due to anger results in people saying those are your true colours. Now the question becomes, what about when I do good at my happiest, why isn’t that moment regarded as my true colour as well? Our defining moments shouldn’t be narrowed down to moments when we are negative or simply just having a bad day. We all have bad days; we all have a negative side, and does that mean we are all just bad people? I mean, if we really take into consideration this ‘true colours’ concept, then no one is actually a good person.  I hate that humans have idolised negativity so much so that you can do 20 good things, but the minute you do one bad, you are completely judged based on that. In this instance, I’m not referring to people with generally bad reputations and consistent bad habits, I’m mostly looking at the general human being with a clean record, who bursts out in anger one evening and that very moment is regarded as their true colours.

Change

To completely obliterate someone’s good character based on one moment is doing them a major injustice. People repent and change; more than anything, people evolve, and it is human nature. The human generally adapts to situations to fit the mold and also changes according to what they are exposed to. Therefore, we need to be more accommodating and exercise a bit of tolerance in order to attain peace among ourselves, because defining people based on a once-off behavioural trait is completely below the belt. We owe each other more credit for the good things that we actually do, we are humans after all and we are nowhere near perfect.
