ESWATINI ELECTIONS OBSESSION

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

There is an extreme obsession with these elections. I think it is reasonable to think that not much will change in the future. Under the current Constitution, the kingdom’s Parliament does not have the power to effectively exercise its mandate to hold government accountable or control the budget. People in the country understand this very well.

I cannot see much interest from the side of the monarchy to engage in a dialogue and government to fight the corruption that has engulfed the country.
I believe the worst in the current situation is that since the 2021 unrest hope got lost. The restoring of hope into a possibility of a better future should have been a priority. Maybe it will happen, but the hope is not there anymore.

We should be seeing real investments, real jobs and a real and consistent fight against corruption. Read this publication; how many jobs have been announced or advertised in it? This publication understands the situation very well in this country and it often reports good stories, but no reaction is forthcoming. Nothing is changing; there is just no impact. Soon we will hear, people should vote or else ... no jobs for them. That would be vetting on a different level. It is quite normal that many people would not vote in a situation like this.
