GOING THROUGH, UNDERSTANDING SUICIDAL MIND

Sir,

I often ask myself why people commit suicide, why they decide to end it all despite so many friends, family and organisations willing to help. However, we still see such cases in our midst and this then begs the question ‘why do it’? I guess in some way people never truly listen to the storyteller because they are quick to express their opinion without properly dissecting the sad news. Reasons vary worldwide from house to house as to the committal of suicide. Even the killing of another innocent soul before one commits suicide is a common factor. There are many guidelines as to how to spot a suicidal person; from their conduct to their character and all other factors that seem out of place, but who doesn’t go out of their way from time to time to right their wrongs and complete unfinished tasks.

Attention

What may be perceived as a need for attention may actually be just that; the need to sit that person down and truly listen. However, one may ask; why or how to spot such as everyone else has their own problems to deal with. With crashing economies and broken relationships all round others trudge through yet others find solace in ending it all. So what do the former do that the latter cannot as they surely have something special to deal with all of this without breaking stride or is it just like everything else; some have it while others don’t?

Stronger

No doubt life is tough and the challenges we meet along the way serve to make us stronger and not weaker, as upon introspection of how one survived a particular situation can they truly appreciate the art of living. When a person successfully navigates a situation they do not look at how they won but at how they could have done better. It is said a positive outlook on life will garner positive results and thus people with such an attitude will not dwell on the wrongs but will strive to better themselves so when such a tricky situation avails itself again they are better prepared and more willing to ‘jump the hurdle’. Ever heard how some people were hungrier to achieve that certain something. The key word here is ‘hungrier’. Everyone starves to put something on the table and there is no mercy shown to the opposition, for if they were to be merciful they might lose their share.

Listen

Suicide is hurting and if you are lucky to spot someone in this predicament try to extend a hand, a shoulder and listen attentively for that little that you do is worth more than a thousand Rupees. It is no one’s fault that they lost a friend, spouse, or relative to suicide but the best one can hope for is to be there for those who still struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Like many societal ills that affect our people from rape, murder, kidnapping, etc we are all bound by the need to be there for one another even if you thought it wouldn’t happen to you.
