DIVERSE RELIGIONS CAN HELP

Sir,

Eswatini is experiencing crises from all spheres. As a nation we are at a stage where we are no longer able to realise meaningful social advances. We are battling with COVID-19, political unrests, a dwindling economy, a declining education system, poor healthcare and a society that is losing moral fibre. Advance in technology appears to be tearing our families apart, we are fast becoming socially isolated due to social media, pregnancy prevalence among pupils, increase in cohabitation in both urban and rural settings, etc.

Failing

Regardless of improvement in literacy, we seem to be failing to make sound decisions with regard to our lives. With the state of our affairs, I am even tempted to say that our literacy is proving less effective in gearing up rapid social progress. Instead, it has become its brakes, defying established expectations.  As we battle on, I believe our diverse religions can help us win these challenges, thus helping to build a better future for ourselves and children and to make Eswatini a better place to live in. It is delighting to note that religion defied expectations of experts who, not so long ago, predicted its demise. Contrary to that, people have become more religious than before. This is because religion plays a crucial role in our every day choices. Our religious beliefs and practices shape our choices and decisions. Since we are a religious nation that is predominantly Christian, let us unite towards realising meaningful social progress that will minimise our challenges as a nation.

Celebration

Religion ought to be essentially a celebration of treasure and excellence, which is missing in our nation. Our youth is heavily engaged in drugs and illicit love affairs. Religion is powerful in building society in that, it contains doctrines which among other things, teach the adherents how to conduct themselves. It also teaches them how to handle resentment and envy – turning it into socially harmless and maybe, beneficial channels. Resentment and envy are common these days as more and more people are working hard to become rich and famous thus creating envy and resentment of others. That is why we all need religion; rich or poor, educated or not. The rich and famous need religion the most because they are the ones who have to face the envy of others on a daily basis.

Beliefs

I need to mention that religious beliefs and practices should go with reasoning. This will help us all gain insight into what we believe in thus appreciate the positive roles it plays in our lives. With critical inquiry to our religious beliefs, we can make Eswatini a better nation, and all these challenges, including pupils falling pregnant, would be a thing of the past. Through religion, we can build a new better Eswatini.
