MEN MUST RISE ABOVE BASIC URGES

Sir,

Since Adam and Eve’s days women’s fashions have changed throughout the world, nearly as regularly as the seasons change. At one time it was a sin in Europe to show your ankle beneath your skirt as this was said to be showing too much flesh and was unbecoming of a proper lady. Women in Africa have, over many generations, adorned their bodies with beads, sea shells, furs and feathers. Women in Jerusalem, in Jesus’ days, wore jewellery, revealing robes and make-up on their faces. Hair styles changed nearly as quickly as the fashions.

Informative

Sometimes people become so informative about how ‘right’ they are concerning fashions that they are prepared to kill to defend their viewpoint. Dictator Pol Pot of Cambodia killed everybody who wore glasses. And yet, if you go to Cambodia today, you will still find people who wear glasses. A joke retold over many years in Southern Africa about a boy whom we will call Jonnie, is a reminder to all Christians on how careful we should be when we try to interpret the Bible. The story goes like this. Father Michael arrives at the weekly Religious Education class where he teaches. “Children, who can tell me the name of God our father in heaven?” asked Father Michael. “I know!” Jonnie replied, raising his hand excitedly. “His name is Harold and he is an artist,” Jonnie announced proudly. “No, no, no Jonnie, who told you that?” Father Michael asked while frowning fiercely. “You did Father. You taught us how to say ‘Our Father who does art in heaven. Harold be thy name…’,” Jonnie replied innocently.
“No Jonnie, its ‘Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name’…,” Father Michael explained. I don’t know if there is a place in the Bible which says women should wear dresses. If some people think that the Bible wants all Christians to wear dresses, they should try to read the Bible again, just in case they made the same mistake as Jonnie from this story.

Women sometimes say, about a certain type of man, that “…men think with their brains or with their family jewels but cannot manage to think with both at the same time.”  I sincerely hope that this is untrue and that my brothers out there are able to rise above such basic urges and accept women as soul bearing human beings, in jeans or dresses or anything else they might decide to wear in the future. And you can rest assured that fashions will change and women will wear whatever their individual personalities inspire them to wear.
