SNAT’S 15 DEMANDS TOO MUCH

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Thank you for giving me space to publish this letter. I am really worried by the continuation of schools re-opening because of the COVID-19 virus. The Ministry of Education and Training seriously needs to come out and tell us something in this regard.

Many countries in Europe where the infections are every high have started opening their schooling systems, but we in Africa are still on this lockdown nonsense. Here in Eswatini we have registered only two deaths  out of 1.3 million people. In the USA bout 100 000 people have died out of 360 milllion people.

Comparing

By comparing the above numbers one will realise there is no need for both Eswatini and South Africa to continue with this draconic lockdown  while USA is opening its economy. Salons and schools  are being opened in Europe where the death toll was astronomical while we are still clueless about what to do about these SMEs, which by the way are the backbone of our economies.

Will it not be enough for our school children to wear masks and go back to school? Schools fumigated . washing of hands encouraged and life must go on for these school going children. The 15 demands as prescribed by the Swaziland National Association of Teachers are just too tall an order for the government to accomplish.

Accomodate

Where will government get money to build more classrooms to accommodate the 20 pupils per class they are asking for? If government had money why were they not paid their cost-of-living adjustment (CoLA)? Or is it their turn to punish the government for not giving them money? Maybe SNAT has more under their sleeves than it appears.

The Cabinet needs to do something about this situation. They are mature minds and can come up with reasonable solutions than the chaos that the 15 demands will create. They are asking for disposable writing materials  for school children and so on. Where in the world did they hear this from?

Complete

We need to go back to school as soon as possible so that we can complete the 2020 academic year to make way for the children who are now in pre-school to get space in Grade One in 2021. If we waste away the 2020 academic year , there shall be chaos in January 2021, do mark my words.
The COVID-19 we are made to believe is here to stay, is just like HIV so let’s just get over it and move on my people.
