LETTER TO MBABANE CITY COUNCIL
Sir,
Rubbish to be collected once a week!? We appreciate efforts to maintain social distancing and contain the coronavirus showed by the country.
We also support that waste collection, processing and effective disposal during this lockdown period continue in order to ensure that cities and towns remain clean, healthy and environmentally acceptable.
Public waste management is as essential during this time as any other and waste generation is most likely increasing at household level and decreasing at a business level.
The reasons behind halving the collection days at residential areas by the Mbabane City Council therefore does not make sense.
Reduced removal of waste in the residential areas could lead to very negative consequences which could for example increase disease spreading among communities from flies and rodent infestations.
Dogs also open up bags left on the streets, which is not only unsightly but also hazardous to our health.
Rubbish
The rubbish is washed into our drains with rain and consequently into our streams and rivers.
We are noticing more rubbish than usual in our streets and people just leave bags where they please, not even outside their properties but rather on street corners or adhoc along the road.
Cutting the service in half means we are essentially asking people to accumulate more trash at their homes, which is not being managed well at the present.
Rates were paid last year so money should be available for the service of waste management to continue during this time. It gives people much needed jobs and work can be implemented on shifts so as to keep within required standards set out by government during this time.
Potholes are also not being filled in, which is something that could easily be carrying on with a skeleton staff. No better a time to do it with the roads empty. If we as ratepayers get half the services provided could we please pay half the rates.
Mbabane Ratepayer
