DRUGS DOMINATING TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

Sir,

Allow me to invite all the caring souls to join me as I try to do away with the black cloud which seems to be engulfing most of the upcoming learned generation. Today I stand up in this altar; I invite everyone to focus attentively as I unveil the wrongs of engaging in bad habits like drugs. The issue of the overuse of drugs in tertiary institutions has reached alarming proportions and it needs to be looked into as it is destroying our learned young people. Seemingly, when one doesn’t use drugs, he or she is regarded as old-fashioned. I must say that drugs have lately become the youth’s favourite chill pill. And I wonder if they do give them that chill they claim they do.

Support

Most students support their use of drugs by mentioning that they have been through a lot. The storm inside them is at its worst. They claim that it’s better to been seen by the world that you’re drowning in a river of tears than to burn inside alone in a pit of hell. They say only if their eyes had curtains to reveal what they have been through, maybe the world would see all the things most have been through before the victims try to reveal that to them by taking drugs.

Fit

A lot has been said about peer pressure and its influence, especially on teenagers. Some tertiary students take drugs because they make them fit into the so-called crew. They believe drugs unleash the beast inside them. After taking those mind-blowing substances, they feel wild and powerful to take on even lecturers. In the end, one is expelled from tertiary due to inappropriate behaviour. Maybe some have forgotten why they came to the institutions. Education is the key to success not drugs.

Most pupils want to forget about all the tragedy they have been through by imbibing intoxicating stuff. But the truth of the matter is that drugs may seem relaxing and calming the situation for a while, but their long-term effects are horrific. They are surely another reason for suicide and other violent acts. Some individuals have been exposed to drugs like marijuana because they have been brainwashed by wrong perceptions that those drugs open their minds. They believe taking drugs will help them deal with demanding courses, like Engineering. The painful part is that we focus on what is currently ongoing and forget about the long-term effects, like cancer.

Believe

Good people, let us not be bemused by what most believe in but let us believe in what builds us and I am pretty sure that’s good for us. The literate say knowledge is power but today allow me to rephrase the statement and say ‘the application of knowledge is power’. Drugs bring nothing but more challenges to people. They have the power to change one’s behaviour to the worst and even drive someone insane. Why, then do we have to make our lives complex with all the things we can live without? #SayNoToDrugs!
