THE BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY

Sir,

There are three kinds of people; those who make things happen, those who watch things happening and those who wonder what happened. The young shall grow to become one of these, so choosing the type of person you want to be is a decision made at a young age.

If you choose to make things happen, you should choose now; if you choose to watch when things happen you also choose now and if you want to choose to wonder what other people have done, again this is the ideal time to choose.

Influence

Those who make things happen are those who have the capability to influence, those who watch things happen are those who regret the opportunity they missed and instead watch, while those who wonder what happened are those who have very little or no capability to influence their environment because they failed to utilise their opportunity while it was time for sowing.

With the opening of schools yesterday, your journey has begun. It may seem like the journey has chosen you but a few years down the line you must change focus to make the journey interesting. You must voluntarily choose the journey since doing something that you have chosen makes it more interesting than doing something that has chosen you.

Achieve

If you want to achieve big things, start by achieving small things, since small things give birth to big things. You cannot expect to pass at the end of the year if you keep on failing all the tests, since adding a million fails together will always give you a big failure.

Someone once said ‘a fresh half of bread is better than a spoiled loaf’. This is to say as you take the first step to your achievement, regardless of the class you are in, take every little task seriously and ensure that you stop all negative habits such as late coming, absconding classes and having a negative attitude toward certain teachers. Remember that passing cannot be by accident but it is a result of thorough preparations and hard work, and also take note that sometimes you can prepare to fail.

I heard that Junior Certificate results have outshone the results of the past decade, which means they were the best results since 2010. This showed an improvement which needs to be celebrated. I will not go into the withdrawal of English Language as a passing language as that is an issue that needs to be addressed separately.

Despite the good results, we have a significant number of pupils who failed to advance to the next classes in all the schools.
A short message to them is that the journey is not yet over but a corner has just delayed you. The world is waiting for you out there. I want to believe that no one has not experienced failure but the difference you must learn is that failing is part of the journey of life. The best thing to do is to learn from failing and continue to sthrive for your desired future.
