LIES, DECEIT WILL DESTROY US

Sir,

EmaSwati are known for many virtues; patience, trust, hope, respect, humility and caring.
But there is one vice we all seem to have in abundance. It’s the telling of sweet little lies.

This habitual vice has become so rampant in the country that it overwhelms any virtue we claim to have as a people. No one can claim to have been spared from it, including the liars themselves.
We don’t necessarily tell green lies like most people in other countries do. We’re far better than that. We operate at a higher level.

Twisting

We’ve mastered and refined the art of twisting truth and tainting it with loads of lies to such a degree that the story we end up telling becomes believable, even to a suspecting listener.

This form of lying is far more dangerous than that of telling ‘green lies’ because it is immediately believable. To make things worse, the one who hears it doesn’t find the need to establish its truthfulness or otherwise.

Our politics in general have become an incubator for lies and deceit, and in our culture this is perfectly acceptable.

Scale

This vice is not a new phenomenon in the country, it has always been there but it has begun to reach biblical proportions in terms of scale.
It’s getting out of control. Even some pastors have joined the bandwagon and they don’t blink twice before they utter a fable.

This begs the question of how safe are we? Eswatini will not be brought down by strikes and what not because we are too civilized for that. We will however, turn against each other because of sweet little lies. We need a state of emergency on lies and God’s intervention. Let us all commit, from politicians to the man in the street, to stop telling lies that are killing this nation. We’re about to reach the tipping point.
