THE SPIRIT OF PENINAH II

Sir,

The spirit of gossip is tantamount to rejoicing at the misfortune of others. It is gloating over the shortcomings and sins of others. Gossip is indeed the epitome of delighting in evil. Equally guilty is the one who gives an ear to a gossip; “Gossips would do little harm if they didn’t have so many eager listeners.”

Have you ever had anyone come up to you and whisper in your ear, ‘have you heard’, and then tell you something good? It hardly ever happens. The Bible admonishes us to ‘let no unwholesome word proceed from our mouth, but only such a word that is good for edification according to the need of the moment that it may give grace to those who hear’ (Ephesians 4:29).

Building

In other words, don’t let any type of negative word come out of your mouth but let building-up words come out of your mouth, and in doing that you will be blessed. Someone once said; “A child spends two years learning how to speak and the rest of his life learning how to shut up.” That’s pretty profound! Also, we must consider the fact that God gave us two ears and only one mouth for a reason.

Sensitive

That should make us think. We must always remember that it’s bad to be a gossip but it is absolutely ridiculous to associate with one. Let’s ask God to make us sensitive to the things that we do that fall into the same category as the spirit of Peninah and let’s get rid of them from our lives. The Bible tells us we can do that if we discipline ourselves to do so and by the power of the Holy Spirit it is a possibility and it is a probability, and that is something to get excited about.
As a child of God you must stop telling people bad words.

You must stop using all sorts of bad or provocative words. Whenever you make comments that will hurt your sister, brother, father, son, mother, daughter, neighbor etc, just know that you have allowed satan to use your mouth rather than God. Each time you are happy because your rash comments have made your brother or sister cry and question the love of God, you have just been used by satan to accomplish his mission as an accuser. It is important we understand that we can gradually snuff life out of somebody by the words of our mouths. Therefore, ‘when the right and opportune moment comes for speaking, say something that will edify’.

Let us therefore, strengthen one another daily; let us desist from all forms of malicious comments, inciting statements, scandalous talks and evil insinuations. Evil comments are sin before God. Let your words become healing balm to whoever hears them. Let your utterances bring peace, unity, love and joy.

To parents, do you realise that satan says amen to whatever evil spoken on your children and tirelessly follows it up to make sure the child resembles or behaves inconsonance with the words of your mouth.

If they hurt, you must pray for them to change rather than placing a curse on them. Colossians 4:6 says; “Your speech should always be pleasant and interesting, and you should know how to give the right answer to everyone.”
